Feeling irritable? Flighty? Sluggish? If you are experiencing a change in attitude or being, your doshas may be out of balance. Doshas are a staple concept in Ayurvedic healing cuisine, which teaches us that the world and everything in it, including human beings, are made up of three dynamic forces of vital energy. These energy forces, called doshas, combine in each of us and make up our own individual constitution.
The three doshas are vata, pitta, and kapha, and they each contain their own set of qualities:
- Vata qualities are the qualities of air and ether. It is dry, cold, mobile, and light.
- Pitta qualities are the qualities of fire and water. It is hot, oily, sharp, and fluid.
- Kapha qualities are the qualities of water and earth. It is heavy, cold, dense, and static.
According to Ayurveda, each dosha is present in every human being, to varying degrees, but ultimately, you have an optimal combination, known as your constitution. If your doshas are balanced, you experience a clear state of mind and a balanced physical body, but if your doshas are imbalanced, you may experience mental and physical obstacles.
